BMC Research Notes is committed to supporting the research community across all scientific and clinical disciplines. 

By providing a platform for micro publications and short reports, we are making your work easier to find, cite and share. All of our published content is peer-reviewed and Data notes receive additional checks by the Springer Nature Research Data team.

Anatomy of a Research NoteResearch notes are short reports, limited to 2,000 words that describe scientific observations. 

This micro publication is structured into Background, Main text and Limitations and can be accompanied by up to three tables and figures. 

Research Notes are suitable for

  • Updates to previous observations and methods
  • Reporting of additional controls
  • Descriptions of new functionalities
  • Null results
  • Pilot studies and preliminary results

Anatomy of a Date NoteData notes are short articles, limited to 1,000 words that allow you to describe your data and publish it. 

An analysis or interpretation of the data as well as conclusions are not required, as they purely describe the data. 

Examples include

  • Genome sequences and omics
  • Expression profiles and cell (image) analysis
  • Crystal structures 
  • Qualitative study data/questionnaires
  • Video, audio, text and image files
  • Medical/patient data
